Over the last month, the population of bees has become overwhelming. When I crack the top to add sugar syrup, the bees are clinging to the screened cover in clumps…so I called the local master beekeeper for advice. I wasn’t planning on adding a second honey super, but I was concerned that the bees might swarm because they were running out of space. He agreed that the best plan of action was adding a second super.
After a mishap that resulted in exchanging a honey super that was cut wrong and a sting to the face, I was finally able to add the super today thanks to Christy who took charge of priming and painting it.
I am excited to see what happens next. The hive is almost five feet tall, matching the asters that are getting ready to bloom. Will the bees build comb and fill it before the end of the season?
